What is the lifespan of a tire?

In terms of time not miles. My VW Golf is low mileage, the floor is good, but the tires are Now 6 years old. I was wondering if the rubber compound deteriorates after a certain period of time that makes the tires unsafe.

There Not so long ago that degrades the rubber surface is mainly our atmosphere and sunlight. If you see any cracks or surface in minutes scanning time in one of the rubber surfaces, it is time to consider replacing the tires.
