I have a set of Ping Eye 2 irons. They are the original grips and shafts from sometime in the late 80s. My dad used them for 7-10 rounds a year for a few years after he got them then they sat in the garage. So the heads are in good shape and the grooves are good as far as I can tell. So I’d like to get them re-gripped for sure. How much does this cost per club if I get a Lamkin grip that costs around .00 per grip? They have a Ping ZZ lite shaft on them. The shaft isn’t damaged but I’m sure it is outdated. So how much is the labor (not including the supplies) on regripping and reshafting clubs? From a few of the prices I’ve seen online it looks as if I can get this done for about 0, seem about right? I’ll be regripping 10 clubs and reshafting 6 clubs. Does Ping offer any discount on new grips or shafts or anything if I take it to a Ping authorized repair shop? Do I really need my new shafts Pured or aligned or whatever it is? Or is that just a way to get more money?

1Do you want to regrip your clubs for under $4.00 each – INCLUDING the grip? I typed the steps below telling you how to regrip. For solvent you can puchase grip solvent (however, and most people freak out when I say this but I always used gasoline). You only need about a soda cans worth to do a whole set. I take an old vegetable can bend (close) the top so that it has a spout and fill it about half way full with gasoline from my lawn mower gas cans. Do it outside and don’t smoke. You can get double sided tape lots of places. It’s really not that hard.
Here’s the steps
1 – Remove the club’s grip, with a knife if need be. (If you have graphite shafts be careful about cutting the shaft. If they are steel shafts don’t worry about it)
2 – Remove any tape that remains on the shaft, and clean any tape residue using grip solvent (gasoline) and a piece of cloth.
4 – A vise comes in handy here. Don’t worry if you don’t have one. I set my club in the vice (rubber pads so you don’t damage the shaft) so that the shaft points down around 30 degree. This lets the gasoline run off the shaft away from the heads.
5 – If you want to increase the size of the grip do this step otherwise skip it. – Use Masking tape to go under the double stick tape. Wrap 1-2 layers on the shaft. Measure how long your grips are and make the tape about 1/2 inch shorter. You can look at what’s under your current grips and decide if you need to apply masking tape.
6 – Apply double-sided tape either around the shaft like a barber pole or go straight up and down the shaft. It doesn’t matter which way the tape runs. Be careful and don’t get any creases or folds in the tape. If you do remove it and start again.
7 – Plug the hole in the butt end of the grip. Using a tee works fine. You can also use your finger is you like.
8 – I tear off squares of toliet paper to help in the following processes.
9 – Pour solvent (gasoline) into the open end of the grip.
10 – Cover the open end with your thumb and shake it to distribute the solvent. Make sure you get the entire inside wet.
11- I use a paint roller tray to catch the gasoline in step 12.
12 – Pour the solvent onto the taped area of the shaft by remove the tee in the butt and letting the solvent run out the small hole. You must get all of the tape (on the shaft) wet. If you run out of solvent you can use some for the can to wet the shaft.
13 – When all solvent is out of grip use a tissue to cover the butt hole of the grip.
14 – Place another tissue on the underside of the grip near the open end and slide the new grip onto the club.
15 – You have lots of time (10-15 minutes) to adjust the grip.
16 – Once you get the grip aligned where you want, set them asside to dry for 5-6 hours. I always waited until the next day.
17 – Wash your hands.
Don’t get new shafts. Shafts don’t generally wear out. If they are the wrong flex you would be better off buying new clubs. Yours should be fine. You don’t really need pured or aligned shafts.

2Regripping clubs does not cost that much. You could do it yourself. It’s much easier with a vice grip believe me. I’ve done it a couple of times without one. You can get a complete set of grips on ebay. As far as reshafting irons, I would definitely take them to a Ping authorized repair shop.

4easiest route go to golfworks.com you can order grips price depends on the style. also you can order a regrip kit for like 6.00 or so it has 2 sided tape and solvent plus they send instructions on how to do it very easy stuff to do. i wouldn’t touch the shafts the zz lites are good shafts unless they are damaged. as far as puring goes i’m a 2 handicap i had it done didn’t make a difference to me a bad swing is a bad swing no matter how you shaft is in short easy way to make more money. go to golfworks save your self some cash.

5Getting pured shafts is really only necessary for the best, most demanding players. It’s a consistency issue for some, but usually it’s not an issue for casual players.
I’m not so sure the shaft is outdated, steel usually holds up well over time unless you sees signs of rusting, or corrosion anywhere. If you are re-gripping them anyway, maybe cut off a grip and shine a flashlight down there to take a peek for condensation damage.
A good steel iron shaft could be from $6 to $20 a piece, and there’s normally a standard charge of around $20 each club for the actual labor on top of the material cost. Labor for the grip is normally included if you get the re-shaft done at the same time, otherwise you could expect to pay a few dollars per club for that service alone.
You might be right about $180-$200 total. Sorry, I’m not a Ping guy, I have no experience with their customer services. Good luck.

6It might be worth your money to get an upgrade on some new irons.
I wanted to get some Cobra Forged SS irons regripped and reshafted with some Regular flex steel shafts. After researching, a new set of used Cobra Forged CBs would have been a better investment.
Instead… I traded in the Cobra Forged SS and used the credit to purchase a new Driver…
Moral of the story – don’t reshaft unless you’re like a single handicap who feels your game will improve with these irons. I suggest a new set for the money!

7Never having seen the clubs…the Ping ZZ Lite shaft was and still is a good all around shaft. If there are no dents or rust I wouldn’t get them reshafted.
Regripped is easy there are plenty of online tutorials that will teach you how to regrip a club, so you’ll just be out the cost of the grips, some double sided tape, and some mineral spirits….you can probably get them all regripped for around $35.00 bucks and be happy as a lark.
If you do decide to get these clubs reshafted I would send them back to Ping directly….reshafting the Ping irons should not be attempted by your local clubfitter…they should be handled by the experts…and don’t worry about spine aligning them or any of that stuff…unless your a top 50 player in the world you’d never notice a difference!!
Good Luck!
